The novel opens with Crusoe disobeying his father and going out to sea. He plans a slave-gathering expedition which is compromised by a shipwreck on an island near Trinidad, where he toils for his daily needs. Crusoe manages to construct a shelter, secure a food supply, and comes to accept his stay on the island as the product of fate. Robinson Crusoe is often considered the first novel, having helped define its new genre by dispensing the ornate style of the 18th century English upper class. Crusoe narrates, alternating between the first and third person, with little grandeur, often avoiding drama and emotion in favor of a simple approach to facts as the novel unfolds. The novel's theme of solitude laid the foundations for the modern central themes of alienation and isolation. Scrooge, having gone to sleep, is first visited in his sleep by the Ghost of Christmas Past, a phantom who enkindles in him regret of his former lack of compassion. The Ghost of Christmas Present shows Scrooge Christmas as it would unfold the next day, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come leads Scrooge through a series of scenes involving an unsympathetic creditor who turns out to be Scrooge himself. A changed man, Scrooge shares his newfound Christmas spirit, much to the wonder of others, and in the years that follow he honors Christmas with all his heart. The novel opens with Henry questioning his strength, fearing he will run from battle. After putting up a fight, he runs from the line on the enemy's counter-attack. He soon meets a group of wounded soldiers and sees his friend die. Soon wounded himself by a frenzied fellow soldier, he returns to camp where he recuperates until his regiment achieves an unlikely victory, capturing the enemy's flag. After this victory, Henry reflects on his life and concludes he is a man of courage. The controversial ending of this psychological exploration has led several to reconsider whether Henry truly has grown, or if the Crane intended it ironically, claiming that Henry's transformation is unrealistic. Still, the Red Badge of Courage remains America's first war novel, written by a journalist who paints a very realistic portrayal of war, despite he himself had never enrolled.
